Peace on you. We the inhabitants of this earth send our greetings to you." bf66

*Voyager 1 and 2, Two Travelers Who Will Never Return*

These are the two farthest machines ever made by humans. Two twin machines to which we have said goodbye, and now they are going alone in the darkness.

*When did the idea come?*

The idea of going to space is not new. The Russian teacher Tsiolkovsky said in 1903 that space can be reached with a rocket. But the special idea for Voyager was presented by a 23-year-old student Gary Flandro in 1965. He calculated that in the late 1970s, the four large planets of the solar system - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune - would come into one line. This happens every 176 years.

The advantage of this alignment was that a spacecraft could pass by Jupiter, take a free speed boost from its gravity and be flung towards Saturn, then from Saturn to Uranus, and from Uranus to Neptune. This is called "gravity assist". Going directly to Neptune would take 30 years, with this method the work was done in 12 years.

This was the Grand Tour. That is why NASA built two spacecraft.

*What if there had been a delay?*

If they had not been launched in 1977, this opportunity would have been lost. This window was open only from 1977 to 1978. The next time these four planets will gather like this will be around 2150. That means a wait of one hundred and fifty years. Because of this urgency, Voyager 2 was launched first - on August 20, 1977, and Voyager 1, 16 days later on September 5, 1977. Voyager 1's path was faster, so it went ahead.

*What message is kept inside?*

Carl Sagan's team placed a golden record on each spacecraft. A 12-inch copper disc coated with gold. It will not be damaged in space for a billion years.

What is in it?
- Greetings in 55 languages.
- 115 pictures - the human body, Earth, the Taj Mahal, a child drinking milk.
- Sounds of the Earth - wind, rain, birds, whales, a baby crying, the sound of a kiss.
- 90 minutes of music - Beethoven, Bach, Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode, and the Indian Raag Bhairavi.

*And the Urdu message?*

In this record there is also Urdu. In a woman's voice:

> _"Assalam-o-Alaikum. Hum zameen kay rehnay walon ki taraf say aap ko khush amdeed kehtay hain."_

In NASA's list its English translation is written as: "Peace on you. We the inhabitants of this earth send our greetings to you."

*Where have they reached so far?*

Today, in September 2026:
- _Voyager 1:_ About 25.5 billion kilometers away from the Sun, 170 AU. Its signal takes 24 hours to reach Earth. In November 2026 it will become the first human-made object to be one light-day away. It is traveling at 17 kilometers per second.
- _Voyager 2:_ About 21.4 billion kilometers away, 142 AU. Its signal takes 19.5 hours.

Both have entered interstellar space. Voyager 1 in 2012 and Voyager 2 in 2018 exited the boundary where the Sun's wind ends.

*What important discoveries did they make?*

They were built for five years, they have been working for 48 years.

1. Volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io - the first active volcanoes outside Earth.
2. Jupiter's faint ring, which no telescope had seen.
3. The true shape of Saturn's rings - thousands of fine lines, with braids and shadows.
4. Saturn's moon Titan, whose air is as dense as Earth's and made of nitrogen.
5. The first and last detailed view of Uranus and Neptune - the tilt of Uranus and the ice fountains on Neptune's moon Triton, seen only by Voyager to this day.
6. In 1990, the "Pale Blue Dot" - Voyager 1 turned from 6 billion kilometers away and took a picture of Earth, a speck that is the home of all our wars and all our love.

*How long will they remain useful?*

Their electricity comes from a nuclear battery, from plutonium. Every year 4 watts are reduced. NASA is turning off instruments one by one. It is estimated that from 2030 to 2035 they will become completely silent and stop sending signals.

But they will not die. The golden record will keep floating in space for billions of years. After 40,000 years, Voyager 1 will pass near a star Gliese 445, from a distance of one and a half light-years. Voyager 2 near Ross 248.

This is the letter whose recipient may never be found, but the sender has told that we were here, we sent greetings, and among our languages there was also Urdu.
