*How Many Oceans Are There? One, Five or Seven*
Since childhood we have heard that there are seven seas. People say "across the seven seas". But today's map says there are five oceans, and in reality the water is one. It is important to understand this difference.
*The Five Oceans of Today*
There is only one large body of water on Earth. We have given it five names to understand it. One big ocean that lies between America and Asia is called the Pacific Ocean. The second one between America and Europe-Africa is the Atlantic Ocean. The third one near us is the Indian Ocean. The fourth and fifth are the icy oceans in the north and south. The last one, the southern one, was recognized as the fifth in the year 2000. All five are connected to each other.
*So where did the story of seven come from?*
The story of seven comes from religious books and old tales. Every nation described the sea according to its own thinking.
*1. The Concept of the Ancient Hindus*
In the old Hindu books, the earth is described as having seven parts. Around each part there is a sea. The first is salty water like ours. The second of sugarcane juice. The third of wine. The fourth of ghee. The fifth of milk. The sixth of yogurt. The seventh of fresh water. The milk ocean is the most famous; it is said that gods live in it. In reality, these are not oceans, but ideas. Things that were precious for life, like milk and ghee, were described as vast as an ocean.
*2. The Concept of the Ancient Greeks*
The Greeks had two words for the sea. One was Oceanus, meaning the great water that surrounds the whole world. They thought the world is like a plate and Oceanus flows around the edge of the plate. No one could go beyond it. The English word Ocean comes from this. And the second word was Thalassa, meaning their own home sea, the Mediterranean. In the beginning they were very afraid of Oceanus, and it was this same ocean that the Arabs later called Bahr al-Zulmat, the Sea of Darkness.
*3. The Concept of the Ancient Persians*
In the Persian book Avesta, two seas are mentioned. One is a large reservoir of fresh water, from which all clouds and rivers are formed. The second is the salty sea in which the tides occur. The Persians did not just make stories, they also did practical work. King Darius, two and a half thousand years ago, had a canal dug that connected the Red Sea to the Nile. This was the first canal in the world.
*4. The Concept of the Ancient Arabs*
Before Islam, the Arabs lived in the desert. They had seen the sea very little. Therefore in poetry they described the sea as a thing of fear. Imru al-Qais says, the night spread over me like the wave of the sea.
When Islam came, this thinking changed. The Quran said that the sea has been made subservient to you so that you may eat fresh meat (fish) from it. Now the sea was no longer fear, it became livelihood. Later, when Arab ships started going to India and Lanka, a sailor Ibn Majid said, the sea is a knowledge and experience is its treasure. These same Arab travelers kept lemons, oranges and coconuts on their ships, so they did not get the disease from which European sailors used to die. The name of this disease is scurvy, which we have discussed in the previous article.
*Final Word*
Seven is the number of stories, while five is the number of the map. And in reality, there is only one ocean that surrounds the whole earth. Old people, according to their own understanding, called this one as seven, as one, as two. Today we call it five to make it easy to understand.
