*The Swings of Adventure*
_(In the context of the recent European situation)_
*From Adventure to Lesson: The King's War, the People's War, and the Voice of the New Generation*
When we turn the wheel of history backwards, a strange contradiction appears. In ancient times, war was the personal estate of the king. Alexander had to conquer the world, Genghis had to gallop his horses, the tribal chief had to beat the drum of his own bravery. The common man had nothing to do with it. From morning till evening he was in search of one or two meals. He would not even know whether the Raja of Lahore had changed or who had seized the throne of Delhi. War was an adventure, the people were merely spectators, and they were far from the spectacle because they were hungry.
Then the nineteenth century combined three magics. Agricultural science grew more wheat, medical science saved more children, and industry put a newspaper in the hands of those children and coins in their pockets. For the first time, prosperity dawned upon the common society. This was the moment when history turned. When the stomach is full, man does not ask only for bread, he asks for meaning. The king sensed this vacuum.
By 1914, that is exactly what happened in Europe. The prosperous young man of the Belle Époque, who until yesterday was tightening nuts in a factory, went dancing to the recruitment office in August 1914. This was not forced conscription, it was voluntary suicide. In France it was called "August Madness", in Germany "Ideas of 1914". The new concept of the nation-state told him that you are not an individual, you are a nation. Color, race, language and geography were made sacred. A German worker felt that the reason for his low wage was the Frenchman, a French farmer felt that the reason his grapes did not sell was the German. The result was two great wars, millions of corpses. The First and Second World Wars are witness to the fact that when the common man becomes an amateur artist in the king's adventurism, genocide is born.
Then history gave its second lesson, which was more bitter than the first. When the architects of these wars failed, they did not die on the battlefield. Hitler died on 30 April 1945 in a Berlin bunker with a pistol to his temple, Goebbels poisoned himself along with his six children, Himmler chewed cyanide. And Mussolini? He did not even have the courage to commit suicide; the people hung him upside down in a square in Milan. This scene was not to be seen through a telescope, it was a mirror. For the first time, the people saw that the one they thought was God turned out to be a coward. The one who had said "I am Germany" left Germany burning and fled. This suicide and humiliation created a lesson that was not in any book. A German mother showed her son the picture of the bunker and said "Look, this is what a leader is like". Since then, even mentioning war in the West has become an insult.
Today in 2026, the wave that has risen in France and its neighboring countries - Germany, Italy, Albania, Spain, Portugal - is the fruit of this same lesson. On the surface it is also a protest, but its genes are completely different.
The old movement said "Die for me". The new movement says "Live for me". When five hundred and fifty thousand people came out in France on October 17, the slogan was not "Conquer Berlin", the slogan was "Give us teachers in our schools, give us nurses in our hospitals". In Germany, tractors came out not against the AfD, but against expensive diesel. In Spain, tents are pitched not for war, but against rent. That is, this movement is a new seed of the old revolutionary tree. In 1789 that tree said demand rights from the state, in 2026 a new branch of the same tree is saying demand bread, shelter and education from the state, not empire.
This is the difference that both connects these movements to world wars and separates them from them.
_What results can emerge from this?_
First, a new social contract for the Western welfare state. France's debt is at 120% of GDP, 15% of GDP is spent on pensions. The people are now saying don't cut pensions, save education. The result will be that Europe will have to choose between giving money to Ukraine and building its own schools. Second, the rise of the far-right can be halted. As long as the protest was only anger, Le Pen and the AfD were benefiting. Now that the protest has become a demand, that politics of anger will weaken.
_And its impact on Iran, Ukraine, Gaza, Yemen?_
These four wars are still being fought on the old model - the king's war. The Ayatollah of Tehran, the Tsar of Moscow, the Prime Minister of Tel Aviv, the chieftain of Sanaa - all are saying "Stand behind me". But their own people are now becoming like the students of France. In Iran, after Khamenei's death in February 2026, even Sunni organizations held up the picture of the Shia leader - meaning the bomb created unity, not sectarianism. In Ukraine, the young man is asking whether we are fighting for land or for chips? In Gaza, the world's largest live-streamed war has told the young European what adventure really means. Therefore, these European movements are not fuel for those wars, they are water.
When the young man in Paris says "We need books, not guns", its reflection also falls on Tehran, Kyiv, Gaza and Sanaa. The king still wants war, but his subjects now start to make him understand.
As Ibn Insha says:
_Truth is good, but it is even better if someone else dies for it._
